Personal Work: Walk for Peace
Wanted to share a few images from my experience recently with the venerable monks for the Walk for Peace in DC and Virginia. The past few months of watching their 2300 mile journey from Texas to DC has been very moving to me. The quiet grace, peaceful message and resilience they exemplified is something I will hold in my heart for the rest of my life.
On Monday, I gathered with about a thousand people in Alexandria to hear the Venerable Bhikkhu Pannakara speak about peace and the power we all have within us to live in peace in every moment. The key to finding peace within ourselves is mindfulness–noticing how our thoughts shape our behavior and choosing the path of lovingkindness instead of anger, rage or hate.
It's a message and practice, I feel, we could all use right now. It doesn't mean we don't act to make things better. It's not an invitation to ignore what is happening in our communities. It's an invitation to take personal responsibility to move forward with love in our hearts, kindness toward our neighbors and to do our part to make the world a better place.
If you'd like to hear their message, visit the Walk for Peace page - the speeches are all there. Have a listen. It might shift something within you. It did in me. ✨
